THE OPEN GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP (OGP) IS A BROAD GLOBAL

multilateral partnership that aims to secure concrete commitments from national governments to promote open government, active citizen participation, transparency, accountability, and the harnessing of new technologies to strengthen governance. This initiative started in 2011 and includes national governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations (CSOs) working together to co-create action plans with concrete commitments across various thematic areas.Malawi joined the OGP in 2013. However, OGP Malawi’s Initiatives were interrupted by the protracted electoral process of 2019 and soon after by the environment amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in March 2022, the President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, resuscitated OGP Malawi, which resulted in a co-creation kick-off workshop held in August 2022. During these meetings hosted by OPC (the secretariat), government, civil society, and private sector stakeholders identified policy/thematic areas that would direct the design of commitments for the new action plan.

HOW IS OGP WORKING IN MALAWI?

OGP in Malawi is coordinated by a National Steering Committee that is charged and committed to leading the implementation of the Malawi OGP 2023-2025 National Action Plan. The National Steering Committee is comprised of government and civil society players who collaboratively guide and support government agencies and civil society stakeholder and private sector stakeholders in implementing the commitments in the action plan. The National Steering Committee executes this through the 5 thematic Technical Working Groups.

WHAT ARE MALAWI OGP TWG?

OGP Malawi has 5 thematic Technical Working Groups which are 1. Open Parliament technical working group, which aims to improving transparency on public debt and financing; 2. Digital Governance technical working group, that looks to accelerate the adoption of e-government and utilization of ICT among Malawians; 3. Natural Resources technical working group that seeks to enhance transparency in natural resource governance; 4. Right to Information technical working that seeks to seeks to actualize transparency on political party and campaign financing; and lastly 5. Anti-Corruption  technical working that
